When you notice uncomfortable emotions arising, instead of stuffing them away, identify and verbally label them.

here’s why:

Research has found that labeling emotions decreases activity in the brain's emotional centers, calming down the fear-based part of the brain while allowing the frontal lobe (the thinking and reasoning center) to have input. Dr. Dan Siegel coined the phrase "Name it to Tame it" to explain this phenomenon.
