It’s easy to feel alone when you’re being challenged by a painful experience. Sometimes other people seem ignorant - or judgmental. Loving Kindness meditation reminds us we are all connected. This contemplative practice is about cultivating compassion by wishing yourself and others peace, happiness and well-being. It has been shown to enhance our capacity for empathy and to better tolerate stressors.
Beginning with a person who is close to you and progressing towards someone you find difficult (list in order below), bring an image of each person to mind and silently offer these phrases to them:
May you be safe. May you be happy. May you live with peace and ease.
someone who has helped or cared for you
a neutral person
a person with whom you have difficulty
anyone who comes to mind – a person, a pet, a stranger…
